JOST couplings now standard on Volvo trucks

Jason Cannon February 15, 2013

Volvo Trucks announced the company will now equip fifth wheel coupling devices from JOST International as standard equipment on all of its North American tractors.

“Introduction of this new standard fifth wheel represents our ongoing focus on safety, driver productivity and customer value,” said Frank Bio, Volvo Trucks product manager – trucks. “We appreciate JOST’s broad product range and availability of information to help specify a fifth wheel based on vehicle application.”

Comprised of only four moving parts, Bio cited the fifth wheel coupling device’s simplicity and and safety as appealing to including them on their trucks. The fifth wheels use a spring-loaded metal locking bar, which slides into position and secures the kingpin automatically. The bar is equally supported on both sides of the coupling, distributing trailer load equally. Further, the fifth wheel can be disengaged using a 60-pound pull lever.

Volvo Trucks continues to offer the JOST cab actuated air release as an option for additional driver comfort.

In December, Mack announced it would offer JOST fifth wheel couplings as standard on its Pinnacle, Titan by Mack and Mack Granite trucks.
