Used CNG trucks trickling into the market
Indianapolis based Palmer Trucks says it has 38 used 2012 Kenworth T440 CNG tractors for sale.
“Palmer Trucks previously leased these Kenworth T440 CNG tractors to Fair Oaks Dairy for their regional haul transportation requirements,” says Frank Walter, Palmer Trucks. “The Fair Oaks Dairy fleet is the first agriculture-based compressed natural gas project to be registered with the EPA’s Renewable Fuel Standard in the United States.”
The 2012 Kenworth T440 CNG tractors are equipped with the 9-liter Cummins Westport ISL-G engine with 320 horsepower, Allison automatic 6-speed 3000HS transmissions, air ride suspensions and 80 DGE (diesel gallon equivalent) CNG fuel tanks. The ISL-G engine uses a maintenance-free, three-way catalyst and is 2010 EPA and CARB compliant without the use of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology or a diesel particulate filter (DPF).
“On average these Kenworth T440 CNG tractors have a 300 to 350 mile operating range,” says Kurt Palmer, Palmer Trucks. “The designed application for the 9 liter is 66,000 GVW.”
This offering could serve as am important beta test for used natural gas trucks. Among the concerns in switching from diesel to natural gas are the resale value and demand for the alternative fuel trucks. Palmer says retail pricing for these units starts at $83,500, which is significantly less than a new tractor similarly spec’d.
Palmer Trucks is an Indiana/Ohio privately owned company specializing in Kenworth trucks, CNG systems, parts and service to its midwest clients.
