Donald L. Sherwood, dealer principal of Sherwood Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star, in Dunmore, Pa., was named one of six finalists for the American Truck Dealers (ATD) 2014 Truck Dealer of the Year.
Sherwood, a former Congressman, grew up in the automotive industry working at his father’s dealership. Following a stint as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army – where he managed a staff of 400 in a maintenance shop at an Army base – he founded Sherwood Chevrolet, which sold mid- and heavy-duty trucks.
Sherwood acquired a Western Star franchise when Chevrolet Heavy Duty exited the market and was offered the opportunity to purchase a Freightliner corporate store in 202, which lead to the founding of Sherwood Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star with his partner, Mark Novitch.
Today, Sherwood’s business operates five dealership locations throughout Pennsylvania that represent Freightliner, Western Star, Sterling and Isuzu.
Sherwood was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives serving on the Appropriations Committee for Transportation and Infrastructure from 1999-2007, and worked with NADA and ATD to mitigate damages to the industry from unrealistic goals for fuel mileage and emissions.
Sherwood Freightliner was named as the 2014 Pennsylvania Truck Dealer of the Year by the Pennsylvania Automotive Association and Pennsylvania Truck Dealers.
In 2002, he was part of an EPA committee for hearings on diesel engines.
Locally, Sherwood has supported the school board, and has contributed to several organizations, including the Wyoming County United Fund and Wyoming County Induction Foundation. Along with his dealership and customers, he organized an effort to transport water south to victims of Hurricane Katrina and the team delivered three full trailers of bottled water.
Sherwood set-up and funded a trust fund for the two children of an employee who was killed in Iraq in 2005.
The 2014 Truck Dealer of the Year and runner-up will be announced Saturday, Jan. 25, during the 51st annual ATD Convention and Expo, which runs concurrently with the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Convention and Expo in New Orleans from Jan. 24-27.
