NACFE, Carbon War Room create Trucking Efficiency program

In today’s fleet market, vehicle efficiency is the name of the game.

That’s why the North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) and Carbon War Room have joined forces to create Trucking Efficiency, a coalition that held its first summit in conjunction with the High-Efficiency Truck User Forum National Meeting Monday in Chicago.

Together the two organizations hope to work together to provide research, testing and education on vehicle efficiency technology available in the industry, and “double the freight efficiency of North American goods movement by 2016 through the elimination of market barriers to information, demand and supply.”

Monday’s event served as a catalyst for how the partnership hopes to operate moving forward.

NACFE Executive Director Mike Roeth kicked off the event by speaking to the need for improving vehicle efficiency in today’s operations.

According to statistics released by American Transportation Research Institute, Roeth says the typical Class 8 fleet tractor in 2012 traveled 109,000 miles with a fuel cost of 64 cents per mile. That totals out to $69,869 per year, per truck in fuel prices.

With numbers that high, Roeth says fleets are clearly in the market for efficient technology.

Trucking Efficiency’s goal will be to perform testing and research on the efficiency products and present its findings and data to trucking community to help initiate the adoption and acceptance of these technologies.

Monday’s meeting was highlighted by a 90-minute breakout session in which attendees evaluated NACFE’s first three Confidence Reports on the topics of 6×2 axles, anti-idling and tire pressure monitoring equipment. NACFE released its first report on tire pressure monitoring devices and their potential efficiency opportunities in August, and hopes to follow with a 6×2 report this month and an anti-idling report in early 2014.

Each in-depth discussion was geared around ways to promote and build initiative in the fleet community to adopt these improved fuel efficiency technologies.

The event also included a panel discussion on sustainability and vehicle efficiency with Mike O’Connell from Frito Lay, Bill Kozek from Navistar, John Nelligan from Meritor and Scott Perry from Ryder. Perry also presented on results on how Ryder’s early adoption of fuel efficient technologies are performing within its fleet.

During their one-hour discussion, each member of the panel spoke to the value of testing and adopting efficient technology in today’s marketplace.

NACFE and Carbon War Room are focused on providing evidence to support efficient technology use in today’s vehicles, and Nelligan says as more positive data becomes available confirming this technology, he expects more usage within the industry.

“If you can make a return on [something], this industry will find a way to use it.”
