HDMA and Randall Reilly, the publisher of Successful Dealer, announce the opening speaker at the fourth annual Commercial Vehicle Outlook Conference will be industry leader and icon, T. Boone Pickens.

Set to be held Aug. 21-22, 2013 at the Dallas Convention Center, this year’s CVOC event will bring together thought leaders from all segments of trucking to share real-world insights on the state of the industry. Among the topics addressed will be alternative fuels and natural gas — the latter of which Pickens will address.

Known worldwide as is one of the nation’s most successful businessmen, T. Boone Pickens built one of the nation’s largest independent oil companies, Mesa Petroleum, and later reinventing himself in his 70s as one of the most successful investment fund operators with BP Capital, HDMA says.

He also has aggressively pursuing a wide range of other business interests, including alternative energy options and Clean Energy, a clean transportation fuels company he founded and took public in May 2008 (the eighth entity he has helped go public in his career).

As a major element and the stage setter for the CVOC conference, Pickens will present his views on a range of topics, including energy, leadership and how he has spent his career striving to inspire others.

“Be willing to make decisions. That’s the most important quality in a good leader,” Pickens says. “Don’t fall victim to what I call the ready-aim-aim-aim-aim syndrome. You must be willing to fire.”

Other speakers at the August event include Robert Bryce, senior fellow at The Manhattan Institute, who will present his facts and findings on the myths of green energy and the fuels of the future; Governor Bill Graves, president and CEO of the American Trucking Associations; and Dr. Jeff Rosensweig, founder of GlobalGuru.com, associate professor of International Business & Finance and the director of the Global Perspectives Program at Emory University’s Goizueta Business School.

The event also will include panel discussions with experts from throughout the commercial vehicle industry designed for fleet executives, suppliers, truck OEMs, independent distributors, dealers and all commercial trucking businesses.
